Types of Precipitation

Precipitation: It is the process in which the evaporated mass of water comes back to the earth in the form of snow, rain, hail, mist or sleet etc.
A major portion of precipitation occurs in the form of rain and small portion in the form of snow.
Three types of Precipitation:
(a) Cyclonic Precipitation:
In case of cyclonic precipitation one air mass is lifted up by the another air mass of different temperature and densities, and results in the precipitation. This is called cyclonic precipitation. This is also called frontal precipitation and the boundary between two air masses is called front. There is another cyclonic precipitation in which the air enters from the surrounding area in the horizontal direction into an area of low pressure and results in lifting up the low pressure air. There is no front in this case. The center of the whirling mass of the air where pressure is low is known as cyclone and precipitation which results so is called as non-frontal precipitation.
(b) Convective Precipitation:
When air carrying vapors has higher temperature than its surrounding it gets lifted up and at heights these vapors condense to form the raindrops. This short duration and high intensity rain is called Convective precipitation.
(c)  Orographic Precipitation:
In India this precipitation is responsible for the major heavy rains. This occurs when the air mass traveling in the horizontal plane gets obstructed by a natural barrier like mountains, and has to rise up and results in its condensation. Condensation results in the formation of the rain-drops which come down under the action of their self heavy weight.
