There are different sources of water and require different water supply systems. Broadly then can be classified into
(1) Surface Sources
(2) Sub-surface or underground Sources
Surface Sources are:
(a) Ponds and Lakes
(b) Streams and Rivers - (i) Perennial Rivers (ii) non - Perennial Rivers
(c) Storage Reservoirs
(d) Oceans, but generally not used for water supply
Sub-surface sources are:
(a) By Natural process - springs
(b) By Artificial Process- Wells, tube wells, infiltration galleries etc.
