Introduction to water supply Engineering

Introduction: Water is a very essential compound for the growth of life and the whole ecosystem.  There is a line "Water water everywhere but there is no drop of water to drink". It means that about 71% of the earth surface is covered is covered with water but still there is no fresh available for drinking. Today water other than for drinking is used for a numbers of other purposes like in industries, flushing sewers, water sports, power generation, fire fighting and so many other domestic uses like cooking, bathing and air conditioning(water coolers). Water is the most important human need after the air. Even in ancient times there are found the traces of the large water supply systems. Water was carried through the earthen pipes and stone pipes and usually was untreated. These days it is well understood to treat the water before supplying it to the public. With time new technologies has developed new systems for water supply. Nowadays plastic and PVC pipes are used to convey water, because these are more durable and corrosion free.
Necessity of Water Supply Engineering: Water is very important commodity and is used in so many daily domestic operations like flushing the sewers, cooking, bathing and washing cloths. It is used in industries, fire fighting, street sprinkling, parks and grounds etc. So it is necessary very necessary to study the water supply Engineering to cope up with the requirement of the water supply for various purposes.
Water Supply Engineering:
The branch of Civil Engineering which deals with the supply of water for various purposes e.g. domestic, industrial, commercial and public is called water supply Engineering.
