Public Water Supply scheme

Public Water supply scheme:

There is a suitable system designed for the collecting, transporting, treating and distribution of water.
In the figure given below:
Water Supply Scheme

If the intake is from a Dam or a reservoir then there is no need to use the lifting pumps to transport the water, it can be done under the gravitational force, but in case if the river is used as a source of water then it is necessary to use the lifting pumps to transport it to higher altitudes.

Design Period:  Design period of a water supply system is the time in years for which provision is made in designing the various capacities of various components of the water supply scheme.
Water supply projects in general or normally are designed for a period of 30 years, which are to be counted from the completion of the project.
Essential Elements of a Water Supply System:
(1) Intake and Reservoir : To collect water
(2) Water Treatment Plant: This include screening, sedimentation, filtration, disinfection units etc.
(3)Elevated tanks and stand pipes: It provides storage to meet peak demands occurring for limited            period.
(4) Valves : It control flow of water in the pipe system.
(5) Hydrants : It provides a connection with the main for fighting fires, flushing streets etc.
(6) Distribution system : It includes mains, sub-mains and branch lines to carry water to streets.
(7) Service pipes: They carry water to the individual house etc.
